Join Carmel Science Bowl

What We Do

Carmel Science Bowl is a competitive academic team that prepares throughout the school year for two main events: the Indiana Regional Science Bowl in February and, for the A team, the National Science Bowl in late April.

We field three teams — A, B, and C — selected through a fall tryout process. All three compete at Regionals; the A team also travels to MIT Science Bowl (TBD) in November and Nationals in Washington, D.C. in the spring.

Fridays from 4:15 to 5:30 PM in H113.

• MIT Science Bowl Invitational — November (TBD, A team)
• Indiana Regional Science Bowl — February (A, B, and C teams)
• National Science Bowl — Apr 29 – May 3, 2027, Washington D.C. (A team only)

How to Prepare

• Pick one or two subjects you actually enjoy and study them deeply. A specialist who consistently hits their subject is more valuable than a generalist who buzzes on nothing. Science Bowl tests on much the same syllabus as the national olympiads, which quickly gets intractable for someone who only learns "stock."
• Practice buzzing. The fastest way to improve buzzing is by having someone read for you and racing to identify the answer before the question ends. Alternatively, you can practice on a number of buzzing sites such as speriphery.
• Just show up. Tryouts are friendly. Most members are happy to help newcomers learn the format. A Team members are happy to share advice for self-studying and more.

• Math: AoPS Intro series, past AMC problems.
• Physics: Khan Academy AP Physics 1, Morin's Problems and Solutions in Introductory Mechanics, past F=ma exams.
• Chemistry: Atkins Chemical Principles, past USNCO exams.
• Biology: Campbell's Biology, chapters 1-5 to start.
• Earth & Space: Tarbuck's Earth Science, Karttunen's Fundamental Astronomy.
